Something About A Messy Room...

Hey there,

I want to share with you something about a messy room. A little story about my lifelong battle with the Mess Monster. Growing up, and honestly even now, keeping my room tidy has always been a Herculean task. Picture this: I’d spend countless hours doing God knows what, and by the end of it, my room would look like a tornado had swept through. No matter how much I cleaned, the mess would inevitably return, like some kind of chaotic boomerang.

You see, I’m passionate about art. I love drawing and painting, and when creativity strikes, it’s like a whirlwind. I get these wild ideas, and I just have to start painting immediately. The problem? Paint ends up everywhere...,on my clothes, the floor, the desk, you name it. It's as if my creativity demands a sacrifice, and that sacrifice is the tidiness of my surroundings.

So my mom, bless her, would try everything to get me to clean up. She’d step into my room, with a determined look to try to get me to put everything in order, but after a while, she threw in the towel. It wasn’t that I didn’t want a clean room, I genuinely did! I just couldn’t seem to keep it that way.

There were times I’d beat myself up about it. I’d think, “Why can’t I just keep things neat? What’s wrong with me?” But then, I stumbled upon a youtube documentary about some famous artist from the past who was also notoriously messy. I wish I could remember who it was, but the details escape me. What I do remember is feeling an immense sense of relief. Here was someone incredibly talented, and they were just as messy as I was. If they could create masterpieces amid the chaos, maybe my mess wasn’t such a bad thing after all.

Before I go any further let me share with you:

What Psychology says about a messy room.

Psychological research on messy rooms reveals a complex interplay between mental health and environmental clutter. Most of the research circles around the issues of,

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • and Depression

Studies say Cluttered environments can cause significant stress and anxiety as the brain may perceives the mess as unfinished business, leading to feelings of being overwhelmed and out of control.

~ Let me just say, I do not disagree with this, and I say that from experience okay...I put in my 10 thousand hours😂.

Anyway, diving deeper into the mental health issues, studies prove that persistent clutter can be both a symptom and a cause of depression. People with depression often lack the motivation to clean, leading to a vicious cycle where the mess exacerbates their depressive symptoms.

~ I don't even want to get into this one!

Over time, living in a cluttered space can deteriorate overall mental health. It can lead to feelings of frustration and helplessness, impacting one’s ability to relax and enjoy their space.

However!

While a messy room can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and depression, it can also foster creativity and a sense of independence. The psychological impact of clutter largely depends on individual perceptions and circumstances.

Some research suggests that a messy environment can stimulate creativity. The disorder may encourage unconventional thinking and problem-solving, as individuals are not constrained by rigid order and structure.

For adolescents, a messy room can be a form of self-expression and autonomy. It allows them to exert control over their personal space, which can be crucial for their psychological development and sense of identity.

In conclusion, not everyone is negatively impacted by a messy room. For some, a less orderly environment feels more comfortable and lived-in, reducing the pressure to maintain a pristine space and allowing them to focus on other aspects of their lives.

Now, with all that being said, I have personally decided to embrace the messy room as part of my creative process. Sure, I still strive for a clean space, and occasionally I’ll have a burst of organization, but I’ve accepted that creativity is rarely tidy. So, if you ever feel overwhelmed by your own mess, remember that it’s okay. Sometimes, the most beautiful creations come from a little bit of chaos.
